Bird Box has been a huge hit for Netflix over the 2018 festive season. The post-apocalyptic horror stars Sandra Bullock as Malorie, a survivor who has to undertake a perilous journey blindfolded to save her two children from a mysterious force that kills anyone who sees it.
The movie was an instant hit when it became available to stream a week before Christmas, on Dec18, and quickly shattered Netflix’s viewing records. The film has since become a cultural phenomenon, with Bullock’s blindfolded character inspiring a series of memes and an online ‘challenge’, in which fans film themselves carrying out everyday tasks with their eyes covered.
It’s been such a success that fans are hoping Netflix gives it a sequel. And Bier has been as shocked as anyone by the success of her new thriller. Asked if there were plans to make a sequel, the filmmaker told People, “We only just finished it! “It’s funny, I’m kind of reading (about) people asking for a sequel and I’m like, ‘Hey, hey, hey, we really just finished!’ So let’s just enjoy it for now.”
Bird Box continues to be a hit for Netflix, and a follow-up film would certainly receive a lot of attention if it were to get an official greenlight. That said, Bier appears to be in no hurry to pick up with another entry just yet.
Bird Box is currently streaming on Netflix.
