The iconic Spongebob Squarepants has seen two films and when can expect another one soon titled The Spongebob Movie: It’s a Wonderful Sponge. That title sounds interesting but the film’s premise also seems like it may thread some pretty intriguing territory. The first flick had Spongebob and Patrick searching for King Neptune’s stolen crown which also saw a little bit of live-action thrown in in there. The second flick, Sponge out of Water was a hybrid live-action/animation focusing on the characters with a CG centered animation as they travel to the surface to the get the stolen Krabby Patty formula back.
It’s a Wonderful Sponge looks like it may be go full CG even with the underwater scenes but will include hybrid sequences with the characters in the live world and will follow the characters pretty early on in the days of Bikini Bottom. The third film will be taking a very different approach with the story as it will focus on an origin story.
According to Cartoon Brew, president of Paramount Animation, Mireille Soria, revealed at the VIEW conference that It’s a Wonderful Sponge would be an origin story. The film is currently slated for a July 17, 2020 release date, she revealed that the film will pay a little homage to Frank Capra’s iconic It’s a Wonderful Life but it’s bigger story will be an origin story in regards to how Spongebob met the Bikini Bottom crew. She revealed:
“For the first time ever, we’re going to the get to the origin of how little Spongebob met the rest of the Bikini Bottom gang at summer camp, the film’s opening will take place at Camp Coral when all of our favorite characters meet for the first time.”
This sounds cool and all albeit a little unnecessary but if we can get some funny nonsense a’la early Spongebob days, it should all be fine. It’s not like Bikini Bottom is Arkham Asylum or anything so it doesn’t really matter how things fell into place but who knows, maybe these guys have a plan for It’s a Wonderful Sponge.
