Guillermo del Toro Is Developing A Stop-Motion Animated Pinocchio For Netflix

Who needs Disney when you have del Toro?.

Disney is making a live-action Pinocchio remake but who cares about that lazy cash-grab when Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro will be making a stop-motion animated one? Yep, unlike Disney’s efforts to just cash in on nostalgia with another lazy live-action remake, del Toro will be putting some actual effort with the art-form of stop motion. Not only that, it’ll be on Netflix.

Yeah, Netflix is backing up del Toro’s re-imagining of the popular fairy tale which saw a beloved animated adaptation from Disney in 1940. The streaming company announced del Toro’s project in a press release and further confirmed that the Jim Henson Company and ShadowMachine (Bojack Horseman) will be co-producing it. The project will be a musical set in Italy under Benito Mussolini’s fascist regime and del Toro himself has described the film as something pretty intriguing in an official statement as part of Netflix’s announcement. The statement says:

“No art form has influenced my life and my work more than animation and no single character in history has had as deep of a personal connection to me as Pinocchio. In our story, Pinocchio is an innocent soul with an uncaring father who gets lost in a world he cannot comprehend. He embarks on an extraordinary journey that leaves him with a deep understanding of his father and the real world. I’ve wanted to make this movie for as long as I can remember.”

Following his Best Picture and Best Director wins for The Shape of Water earlier this year, del Toro looks like he might deliver a fantastic follow up filled with both child-like magic and maturity. Not a lot of filmmakers can balance the two but del Toro is one of them. Stop-motion animation, a classic fairy tale and del Toro sounds like a good formula for a masterpiece.
