If they’re not remakes, reboots or sequels, biopics are the way to go in Hollywood. That’s not to say it’s a bad thing cause biopics can provide great insight on the lives of the real-life people depicted and also provide amazing Oscar caliber films. Biopics on popular figures are aplenty especially figures that are deceased but we’ve seen many good ones in the past. With Bohemian Rhapsody to be released soon, we will be getting a chance to witness a biopic following another force of nature in the music scene, Amy Winehouse.
The Wrap reports that a knowledgeable individual on the matter has revealed that the late singer’s family has signed a deal to executive produce a biopic about Winehouse who unfortunately passed away in 2011 due to alcohol poisoning. Alison Owen and Debra Hayward from Monumental Pictures will produce the project with Kinky Boots writer Geoff Dane attached to write the screenplay and executive produce. Proceeds for the film would go to the Amy Winehouse Foundation, which works to prevent the effects of alcohol and drug misuse. Members from the Winehouse family has yet to provide a response to The Wrap’s request for a comment.
Winehouse’s father made a statement saying that the family has been approached about the rights before but never felt it was the right time. Now, it seems like he feels like the time is right, saying:
“We now feel able to celebrate Amy’s extraordinary life and talent, and we know through the Amy Winehouse Foundation that the true story of her illness can help so many others who might be experiencing similar issues. With Alison and Debra we have found fantastic British producers who understand what Amy meant to people, alongside an illustrious history of bringing amazing female driven stories to the big screen.”
As mentioned before, Winehouse was one hell of a force in the music scene and still is. We saw a documentary a while back titled, Amy which earned acclaim and Academy Award For Best Documentary Feature. Perhaps this biopic can do justice to the singer who has made her mark in the world of music.
