It wasn’t long ago when we found out the start of the filming date for the Birds of Prey film but now it looks like things are really moving forward for the DCEU film. Set to be directed by Cathy Yan, the film is looking to see Margot Robbie back to reprise her role as Harley Quinn but as for the rest of cast, it looks like the options are being narrowed down.
THR reports that Warner Bros has shortlisted the actresses who will play Black Canary and Huntress among others and it looks good. Sources told THR that Gugu Mbatha-Raw who starred in Belle and Jurnee Smolett-Bell who appeared in the acclaimed Underground television series are among the options to play Black Canary. Hidden Figures‘ Janelle Monae was also said to be in the running for the role but it is unclear if she was tested for the part.
As for Huntress, Margaret Qualley from HBO’s The Leftovers, Mary Elizabeth Winstead from Fargo and Scott Pilgrim vs. The World along with Cristin Milioti from How I Met Your Mother and Black Mirror have tested or read for the part.
Justina Machado who stars in Netflix’s One Day at a Time and Roberta Colindrez from Starz’s Vilda tested for the role of Rene Montoya, a lesbian detective in Gotham City’s police force. There’s not much to be said on who will fill the role of Cassandra Cain, a mute and socially maladjusted assassin who was at one point, Batgirl but it looks like things are going on pretty smoothly in regards to casting.
There are apparently other potential candidates for the roles but Warner Bros. is said to be moving pretty quickly on this with decisions set to be made within two weeks. Hopefully, they don’t rush into this and that they would take their time to really get actresses who can nail the roles. However, any of these actresses are good on my book but it would be great to see Winstead back in a comic book film again. Whatever their decision is, they’re all pretty good picks.
