Avengers: Infinity War had moments of humor which was typical of the Marvel Cinematic Universe but overall it was a pretty downer film. It does seem however, that there were plans to include a little bit more fun moments in the film particularly regarding the character of Howard the Duck.
Marvel comics’ Howard the Duck has been adapted to a film before with but it was pretty s–t and a commercial failure but the character made a return in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The anthropomorphic duck made an appearance in the post-credits scene in Guardians of the Galaxy and reappeared in Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 in the planet of Contraxia. It seems that the filmmakers for Infinity War had plans for him to make another appearance but as we know, he didn’t.
Speaking to Fandom, Infinity War directors Joe and Anthony Russo revealed that Howard was in an early draft of the film’s script but the sequence was cut. Anthony Russo revealed:
“Howard the Duck was in one draft of the script. Howard the Duck actually had a really good scene… we were going to cameo with Ken Jeong, with Howard the Duck. That was a much-beloved scene by us but it just didn’t end up fitting at all.”
In his previous MCU appearances, Howard was voiced by Seth Green but it seems like this time, they had plans to have a member from their Community community. It looks like the plan was to have Howard be related to the Guardians again. Joe Russo explained the initial plan for the scene:
Yeah, it was [Peter] Quill trying to track down some information from Howard the Duck on some outlier planet and interrupting him during a poker game.”
It probably wouldn’t have made much a difference in the film and it would have just been a fun little romp but it does seem like they have plans for Howard the Duck. Maybe a Howard the Duck reboot could be on the horizon but only time will tell.
