Ant-Man & The Wasp did pretty well at the box-office, granted not as well as their juggernaut cousin Avengers: Infinity War but it still managed to rake in some cash. Critics seemed to really dig the film as well despite its lack of stakes and bulls–t humor sprinkled everywhere so it’s safe to say that we wouldn’t be hearing the end of this. One of the finer points praised would be the relationship between Paul Rudd’s Ant-Man and Evangeline Lilly’s The Wasp with a lot of emphasis directed towards The Wasp in regards to how she kicked some serious butt. It would seem like a good idea for Marvel to make a Wasp standalone film right? RIGHT???
Well, it seems that Evangeline Lilly is apparently not a big fan of the idea however, alluding to the intrinsic nature of the relationship between her character and Ant-Man. According to Comicbook, Lilly spoke at Fan Expo Boston and was asked on the possibility of a Wasp solo film. She said:
“I would do anything I was told [laughs], I like the MCU and I’d like to stay. But I actually don’t like the idea of a Wasp standalone film, because Ant-Man and Wasp, since the very beginning in the comic books, were always a team. And really, they’re kind of one of the only proper and true teams in the MCU, otherwise it’s mostly a lot of individuals. And I love the team aspect of it, I love watching the interplay between Wasp and Ant-Man and Ant-Man and The Wasp. For me it’s the most fun part of the film.”
This is completely understandable since their banter can be pretty fun when they’re not hitting you over the head with it and this relationship is one of the highlights of the film. She did mention however that she wouldn’t mind leaving Scott Lang for a bit if she were to join an all female superhero led film (big surprise there!). She said:
“So I don’t love the idea of breaking them up — except if there was an all-female Avengers film, then I’m in.”
It does seem likely that this would happen however with how Kevin Feige is taking things in regards to more minority representations so it wouldn’t be a big surprise if this happens. Captain Marvel would be the flick to very likely set this in motion so we’ll wait to see how that does.
