Ant-Man & The Wasp offered MCU fans a much lighter entry following the heavier events of Avengers: Infinity War. This one was fairly tame and the stakes weren’t really all that high as compared to the previous film with a much clearer emphasis on charm and humor. Cameos are abundant in the MCU with Captain America being one of the main characters to be included as one with the likes of Spider-Man: Homecoming and Thor: The Dark World albeit not in ways you’d expect. It seems that Cap was initially planned to be included in the Ant-Man sequel but alas it did not happen.
Speaking to Radio Times, director Peyton Reed discussed plans of including a Captain America cameo in the initial draft for the film. The cameo was set to happen when Luis played by Michael Pena does one of his little flashback recaps with plans to reference the events of Captain America: Civil War. Reed discussed:
“Early on, we had a version where we were going to do a quick version of the tarmac fight from Civil War, with some ridiculous thing where, you know, Captain America has Ant-Man as a baseball and throws him… because the whole thing is Luis’ version of events, right?”
It sounds like a pretty good idea to include into the film but Reed thought the Civil War references were already in abundance and well, in the end they didn’t do it. He said:
“It kind of felt like we’d referenced Captain America: Civil War so much, let’s just do our own thing there,”
Reed’s probably right though as it would definitely seem a like another move to pander and offer fan service. The MCU has definitely done that before and it can be a little fun but it could often times detract from the narrative. Now, Ant-Man & The Wasp didn’t really have a super compelling narrative but doing this would only serve as another distraction to take away from the experience. Granted, some may be into that but maybe Reed was right on this one.
