There are plenty of things to say about the state of the Warner Bros’ DCEU and at this point, what hasn’t been said already? However, there have been plans to produce DC films separate from the DCEU for some time now with a Joker film starring Joaquin Phoenix. Suicide Squad offered a disappointing take on the iconic villain but it seems like another Joker is definitely on the horizon as the Joaquin Phoenix Joker film is now a go.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Phoenix recently closed the deal with Warner Bros. to play the character as shooting is set to begin in September in New York. The standalone film is set to be directed and is co-written (alongside Scott Silver) by Todd Philips, known for his directorial efforts in The Hangover series and the crime comedy War Dogs along with his Academy Award nominated writing effort in Borat!. The film is described as an “exploration of a man disregarded by society [that] is not only a gritty character study, but also a broader cautionary tale.” The release date is unknown for now but it is apparently set to be far different from most comic book films with a budget of around $55 million.
Some people may be a little cautious and confused but with Joaquin Phoenix on board, there seems to be little to worry about. He is without a doubt one of the most talented actors working today with three Academy Award nominations under his belt along with a fine and diverse acting resume. Just look at films like the romantic science fiction film Her, The Master and one of the best crime comedies of the decade, Inherent Vice (Some may have some problems with this one but I think it’s great).
Director Todd Philips may have had his ups and downs but the first Hangover was comedy gold and Borat! was just awesome. With a lower budget than most comic book films, it’s safe to say that they’ll be emphasizing crime and drama instead of special effects heavy action but it’s unclear if it’ll be Rated-R (might as well right?). There are possible plans for another Joker film with Leto but it looks like this will be possibly be released first.
The film is also set to be darker and more experimental in tone as compared to other DC films so that’s something to look forward to. Call it blasphemy but I think there’s a chance that Phoenix might be able to give Heath Ledger’s iconic performance a run for his burned money.
