Ant-Man and The Wasp is the latest Marvel movie to use the company’s famous de-aging technology. Fans who’ve seen the movie know that it’s only used in a couple of scenes and that’s it, though seeing Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeifer de-aged was pretty neat. It turns out that there were originally going to be more of these scenes but director Peyton Reed felt they weren’t needed.
Speaking with CinemaBlend, Reed revealed that there were a number of flashback scenes planned to introduce young Hank Pym and Janet Van Dyne but realized that the present story was more important. The director felt that focusing on the search for Janet should feel vital to the story, so they did succeed.
“It’s tricky, because we talked a lot about how to introduce [Hank and Janet], and I always wanted to see some glimpse of them in the ’80s,” Reed told CinemaBlend. “We talked about doing action sequences, we shot some stuff, and it just felt like… I think I’ve learned this along the way – as much as, as a fan, I want to see flashbacks, the present tense story is the thing. That’s the thing that really matters to me – and also that I felt like it didn’t want to be action. It really wanted to be emotional grounding, because after all, this is a movie called Ant-Man And The Wasp. It really has to be about the emotion of a daughter finding her mother after all this time.”
Considering how the search for Janet was the central premise of the film, it seems like Reed got his way. The film still felt bigger than the first, with much higher stakes and more characters popping up.
Ant-Man and The Wasp is now showing in theaters.
