As Ant-Man and the Wasp is the 20th installment in Marvel’s juggernaut franchise, it’s only fitting that Peyton Reed’s MCU sequel includes one or two post-credits scenes to tease what comes next. One glance at the calendar tells us that Captain Marvel and Avengers 4 are both coming down the pike, and it turns out Ant-Man and the Wasp actually has ties to both movies.
All of this can be traced back to the post-credits scene hidden within the film. It’s one which has already leaked online, and now, director Peyton Reed has weighed in to give a little more perspective to what is undoubtedly one of the most intriguing after-credits stingers in Marvel history.
In an interview with Den of Geek, Reed talked about how they came up with the idea of tying the end of Ant-Man & The Wasp to Infinity War. As it turns out, they always knew that they wanted to address the aftermath of Thanos’ deadly snap, but they initially didn’t know how. It was actually Avengers 3 writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely who came up with the idea.
“What we didn’t necessarily know was how we were going to deal with it. Do we glimpse TV monitors and TV reports of stuff going on in other parts of the world? That stuff seemed kind of lame and obvious. We’ve seen that in other movies. It didn’t feel particularly inspired.
I think that Markus and McFeely did the first crack at that scene, just conceptually. They set up these elements, and we refined it with our writers’ room…It felt like our movie’s very particular way of dealing with that scene.”
We find out during the movie that Scott Lang was under house arrest following his violation of the Sokovia Accords in Captain America: Civil War. But he’s released from house arrest at the end of the movie and free to participate in experiments with his girlfriend Hope, her father Hank Pym and her mother Janet, recently saved from the Quantum Realm. In the first post-credits scene, the trio sends Scott into the Quantum Realm in order to recover some data. But while Scott is shrunk in miniature, Thanos destroys half of all life in the universe. The audience watches Hope, Hank and Janet float away. Scott, meanwhile, is stuck in the Quantum Realm.
In the second post-credits scene for Ant-Man and the Wasp, a gigantic ant who has been wearing Scott’s ankle bracelet while he sneaks out on adventures with Hope throughout the movie, plays the drums in Scott’s house.
Ant-Man and the Wasp is out in cinemas now.
