A lot of people consider Michael Douglas to be a very serious actor, so it was kind of a surprise that he would star in a comic book film like Ant-Man. Douglas is back for the sequel, and he talks about what sets Marvel Studios apart from the other comic book franchises.
Douglas tells Entertainment Weekly: “Each picture, I think they decide upon their big action set pieces, which they set up early on, so they get a lot of time for prep, and then they work their way in. And then, when you get to more character scenes, depending upon the actors, they allow a lot of leeway. So, Michael Peña, for one, comes up with all this wonderful wiggy, wiggy stuff. Paul Rudd’s another one that does that. And I think they encourage that, and it gives you kind of the freshness that I think separates the Marvel pictures from the rest of these superhero films.”
Douglas isn’t wrong; Marvel’s big action sequences are usually thrilling and well thought-out. They almost always have a significant narrative impact, as opposed to being merely an excuse for people to punch each other.
No doubt Marvel is currently dominating the comic book movie industry, and several other studios are trying to replicate the success they’ve had with their cinematic universe. Universal has botched its plans to launch a Dark Universe, but hopefully, DC can rise from the ashes after the disappointment that was Justice League.
Catch Ant-Man and the Wasp in theaters now.
