Fans of Obi-Wan Kenobi have likely been focused on the long-rumored spinoff movie that is reportedly in pre-production. However, a new rumor claims we will be seeing the character long before that. While many have expected Ewan McGregor to return to play Obi-Wan if any spinoff movie is actually happening, this new rumor claims that McGregor is actually set to return to the role in Star Wars: Episode IX.
Last week was a big one in terms of news surrounding the Obi-Wan movie that Lucasfilm has in development. It was first announced that the studio had put all of the upcoming Star Wars anthology films aside for the time being, which included the Obi-Wan film. Lucasfilm later debunked the rumor. Now, according to the U.K. tabloid newspaper The Sun, McGregor will “secretly film for the next Star Wars movie.” If true, that wouldn’t be the first time the actor has worked on the current Star Wars trilogy, as he lent his voice to the sequence in Star Wars: The Force Awakens in which Rey has a Force vision.
Since this is an unverified rumor, moviegoers are advised to take this all with a grain of salt. However, there is an outside chance this could happen. After all, Yoda was frequently rumored for The Last Jedi and Lucasfilm made no official confirmation, saving the reveal as a premiere surprise.
These reports are purely rumors at this point, but it’s interesting to note that the same sources The Sun cites also note that “Disney have been mulling over a stand-alone film for Obi-Wan. There have been concerns about getting the story right.”
Star Wars: Episode IX is currently in pre-production and is expected to begin filming next month. As with all Lucasfilm projects, the specifics are being kept secret.
