It looks like Marvel is going to go further in regards to diversifying their characters in future films with more representations from the LGBTQ community. With more representations pertaining to race and gender manifesting themselves with films like Black Panther and the upcoming Captain Marvel, Kevin Feige is looking to include more to the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s repertoire. Although, Tessa Thompson who plays Valkyrie in Thor: Ragnarok has revealed to Rolling Stone that her character is bisexual, audiences did not get to see that revelation on screen due to it being a deleted scene. However, Marvel is looking to amend that.
The Playlist spoke to president of Marvel Studios Kevin Feige on the possibility of including more LGBTQ characters to the MCU in which Feige responded briskly but with assurance:
The Playlist: When are we getting a Gay, Bi, LGBTQ, out character in the MCU? Is it even in the works?
Kevin Feige: Yes.
The Playlist: That’s the answer?
Kevin Feige: Yeah, that’s the answer.
The Playlist: It’s not someone we’ve seen yet, I’m guessing?
Kevin Feige: Both.
The Playlist: Both?
Kevin Feige: Both ones you’ve seen and ones you haven’t seen.
There are plenty of angles the MCU can go with this with heroes such as American Chavez or even Valkyrie herself. Although Valkyrie was not in Avengers: Infinity War, directors Anthony and Joe Russo have revealed that her character survived the genocide near the end of the film.
Marvel does not really have all too many LGBTQ characters but they do have them and if they have the guts to do so, perhaps take some creative liberties in regards to some characters. Granted, that would piss some fans off and may even seem tacked on to appease some expectations but if it is done right and with purpose, maybe it’ll work. Well, we can’t say much for now but time will tell what future installments would bring.
