As we get closer to Ant-Man and The Wasp‘s release date, it will be interesting to see what the movie does with Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost. Ghost will be the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s first villain played by a woman of color, and its second-ever female villain onscreen.
Ant-Man and the Wasp may be updating Ghost for the MCU, but the villain will retain her classic superpowers from the comics. While the character’s alter-ego is never revealed in the comics, they’re definitely going to be changing that in the film with the character being portrayed by Hannah John-Kamen. This is a character that has been race and gender bent, and executive producer Stephen Broussard told Screen Rant that the power set is very classic while assuring that the character is awesome and badass.
The power set is the same and the look is actually pretty classic, you know, not reinterpretation, but like modernization I think. Our visual design team…does a great job I think of sticking to the classic tropes that made these — what they looked like in the books. Actually going ‘Huh, that’s a pretty good realization of what that might look like in the real world’ and certainly that’s the case with Ghost. When you think of Ghost, you think of the hood. You think of the white suit and everything like that and Hannah wears it very well. She’s awesome. She’s really, really badass.
Originally an Iron Man villain in the comics, Ghost was an anarcho-engineer/hacker with a grudge against titans of industry and big corporations. Ghost can also become invisible thanks to the character’s suit. Though Ghost is typically a villain associated with Iron Man in the comics, it will be interesting seeing how they use her powers against the shrinking powers of Ant-Man and The Wasp.
Ant-Man and The Wasp, directed by Peyton Reed, stars Paul Rudd, Evangeline Lilly, Hannah John-Kamen, Michael Douglas, and Michael Peña. It will be released on July 6th.
