Dark Phoenix has everyone’s fingers crossed especially since the film would be tackling one of the X-Men comics’ most compelling story-lines, The Dark Phoenix Saga. X-Men: The Last Stand failed to pull it off and X-Men: Apocalypse wasted much of the film’s potential. The X-Men film series is a tumultuous one and has it’s fair share of duds and triumphs. Logan may be one of the best comic book films of all time but the series still has a lot to make up for and director Simon Kinberg is tasked to do so with the upcoming Dark Phoenix.
Everything seems to have went well with filming according to Quicksilver actor, Evan Peters and he had great things to say about the first-time director (yes, first-time director). Speaking with Collider, he said:
“He was very prepared and he knew what he was doing. He’s surrounded himself with a great team that’s been there for years. Everybody knows each other. It was a great environment for him to step forward. He knows the characters and story better than anyone because he wrote it. I think it was easy for him and it was very calm. It’s always been a fun experience, but it was also a calm experience, this time around, which was a relief. I’m sure there was a lot of pressure on him, but he’s such a nice guy and so cool. You didn’t see him being stressed or nervous, at all, on set, so it was very cool. “
Kinberg definitely has had experience with the X-Men films as a screenwriter. There have been some duds in his repertoire with films like The Last Stand, Apocalypse, even the god-awful Fant4stic…. Okay, that’s not a great resume but he has also written X-Men: Days of Future Past which some would argue to be the best in the series.
Maybe as a director and screenwriter, he’d be able to pull it off. Through this, he’d be able to prove that the failures of The Last Stand and Apocalypse were more to do with the directors than the screenplay.
