X-Men: Dark Phoenix writer and producer Simon Kinberg wants to bring a more grounded approach to the upcoming film. He wants to focus less on a grand scale and more on the emotional drama that affects the different characters from Chris Claremont’s The Dark Phoenix Saga.
Entertainment Tonight got the chance to speak to Kinberg at the Deadpool 2 premiere. During the interview, Kinberg revealed that the tone of the new X-Men installment would be more grounded and “a little less operatic” than the other X-Men movies. He also said that the film is “more intense, and it’s more real and grounded, and hopefully more relatable.”
The director said that the upcoming film will be more connected to the original comic book plot than X-Men: The Last Stand‘s attempt at the Dark Phoenix comic saga. Kinberg also revealed that the X-Men: Dark Phoenix will feature extraterrestrial characters, which has not been seen in any other X-Men franchise film before.
It’s much more loyal to the original comic than X-Men 3, which told the Dark Phoenix story. It’s a movie that involves extra-terrestrial characters, which is not something that we’ve done in the X-Men franchise before, and is something that is a huge part of the Dark Phoenix saga in the comics.
It will be quite interesting to see how Dark Phoenix turns out as the film is reported to undergo extensive reshoots and additional photography. The film stars James McAvoy, Sophie Turner, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, Nicholas Hoult, Tye Sheridan, Alexandra Shipp, Evan Peters, Jessica Chastain, Kodi Smit-McPhee, and Olivia Munn.
Initially scheduled for launch in November, X-Men: Dark Phoenix will be with us on February 5th, 2019.
