2018 was set to be a massive year for the X-Men franchise, with three movies scheduled to hit screens over the 12 month period. As it happened, though, clearly some major rethinking went on behind the scenes at 20th Century Fox. Extensive reshoots were summoned for The New Mutants and X-Men: Dark Phoenix.
Now, the latter title is intended to arrive next February. In the meantime, it’s set to undergo reshoots either in the summer or early fall. While speaking to Entertainment Weekly, director Simon Kinberg played down rumors that this spells trouble for the production. He explained that it’s normal procedure for blockbuster filmmaking nowadays.
Kinberg had this to say.
“It’s normal for all these big movies now. We’ll go back when we can get all those actors together, and then it will give me enough time to have it ready and looking perfect.”
X-Men: Dark Phoenix was set for November release this year but 21st Century Fox pushed back the date to February 2019. It was rumored that initial test-screenings indicated the third act of the film was not up to standards to Kinberg and Fox, so the studio decided to push back the release date by three months.
The idea of reshoots has become a cause for worry amongst fans, however, they shouldn’t necessarily worry about it. Reshoots have become relatively common in the blockbuster scene. They’re generally built into the production schedule as a way to fine-tune a film’s overall story and look.
X-Men: Dark Phoenix is expected to hit cinemas on February 5, 2019.
