Clark Gregg Reveals Which Avenger Knows Coulson’s Alive

It seems that Earth’s Mightiest Heroes aren’t aware that he’s actually alive. Or are they?

Agent Phil Coulson, played by Clark Gregg, was a consistent presence in the first phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. He was a loyal member of S.H.I.E.L.D. and a quick friend to characters like Tony Stark and Thor. His apparent death at the hands of Loki in Avengers helped rally the team going into the final battle. But Coulson was saved by Nick Fury, going on to secretly become the main character in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.

But during a new interview with Gamespot, Clark Gregg revealed that he believes at least some heroes around the Marvel Universe know that Coulson is actually still alive.

When asked who knows about his survival, Gregg said:

In my mind, Captain America doesn’t know [Coulson’s] alive. It’s bittersweet… We know that Nick Fury knows, obviously, we’ve seen him. And I feel like Tony Stark knows things. He just finds a way to know things, but I think the two of them have had a blunt conversation about it and decided not to share it further. And then we had Lady Sif promise not to tell Thor but I don’t know how much I believe that. And Maria Hill knows, she’s spent time with him. But I think everyone else is just keeping it a secret.

Gregg’s assessment sounds about right to us. Tony Stark’s a smart guy who’s involved with the government and S.H.I.E.L.D. and would likely uncover the underground adventures of Coulson and his team. The Avengers are also always keeping things they should probably share with each other to themselves, too, so we can buy that Iron Man wouldn’t tell his pals that Coulson’s still around.

Of course, all of those heroes might need to get another update on Coulson’s current condition. While a younger version of Coulson just returned to the big screen in Captain Marvel, he wasn’t feeling so well by the end of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. Season 5. While Clark Gregg will remain a part of the show’s cast, it’s not clear what role he’ll play when the show returns later this year.
