You Series Creator Discusses Significance Of Female Masturbation Scene

Yeah, you read that right. Female…

Netflix has plenty of interesting shows to offer from depressingly hilarious masterpieces like Bojack Horseman to depressing mediocrity like 13 Reasons Why. However, the streaming platform is offering a lot to viewers, a lot of shows that push the envelope for what is presented on screen. Whether it’s politics, depression or sex, the Golden Age of Television has tackled them all and Netflix’s You is especially noted for tackling that last bit.

Yes, we gonna talk about sex, one person sex that is, masturbation (You boys know what I’m talking about). You has plenty of cool stuff going for it as it follows New York bookstore manager Joe Goldberg (Penn Badgley) as he becomes obsessed with a customer named Guinevere Beck (Elizabeth Lail). One of those cool things pertain to a scene from the very first episode in which we see Beck masturbating when she’s left alone on the sofa, unsatisfied by her d–khead boyfriend. Joe just creeps on like the weirdo he is by the way.

Anyway, masturbation??? and Women??? Yes, believe it or not, it happens but it’s still a relatively taboo topic to talk about and the series’ co-creator Sera Gamble is pretty aware of that. She highlights the significance of the masturbation scene when speaking to Cosmopolitan UK saying, “I do I think our culture still has some work to do to the reaction of female pleasure in general, and female agency,”. Yeah, seems like jerking off is all people associate masturbation with.

Obviously, this isn’t just there for the sake of being there as everything a character does has some sort of significance (sometimes, even in s–t media) and this scene clearly wants to paint something real as Gamble adds “In general, as someone who makes television and as an artist, I’m interested in fleshing out female characters and being honest about what it is to be an adult woman. If there is still a little resistance to that, and if it does still weird people out, that just makes me want to do it more.”

You isn’t the first show or film to do this as we no doubt have seen female masturbation scenes in various forms of media. We have undoubtedly made progress but let’s be honest here, when you hear the word ‘masturbation’, what comes to mind? Please, be mature…. hehe, masturbation.
