The state of the Star Wars franchise seems pretty shaky especially after the result of Solo: A Star Wars Story but there’s still some hype for Episode IX. It’s still Star Wars after all and despite some polarized fan reception for The Last Jedi, we can still expect some anticipation for future installments in the long-running series. J.J. Abrams is back to helm the upcoming film which will see a release later this year so we can expect something satisfying at the very least.
However, let’s hope Episode IX goes beyond just providing an entertaining flick, perhaps even offering up something pretty ballsy. Say whatever you want about The Last Jedi but at least it took some risks but the fan reception for the film may have wavered their initial plans for where the next installment could go… or has it?
Speaking to Deadline as he continues to garner Oscar buzz for his role in the acclaimed BlacKkKlansman, Kylo Ren actor Adam Driver discussed Star Wars. He teased a little bit on what to expect from his character in the next installment revealing that he had an idea of where it was all going go to from the start. He said:
“With Star Wars, I had one piece of information of where it was all going, and that’s where it has been in my head for a long time, and things were building towards that. It feels very theatrical, if anything. Because in the plays that I’ve done, a six-month run, on the very last day, you finally feel like, “Oh, now I have a better understanding of what it is that I want to do. I wish we could do this all over again.” Working on a play, the questions you can ask yourself are infinite, and that’s what’s torturous about film sometimes – you only have one shot to get it right. And you can do a lot of takes, but we’re not all going to get back together again and do this. But for something you’re doing for six years, you still have a chance to go back and make something a little bit more articulated.”
From here, we can surmise that not there has been a direction for where the character would be going and that Episode IX would strive to get there. We can expect Driver to give his all in Episode IX and we can expect the film to be something pretty damn interesting as well… I hope. Perhaps, we’ll be seeing a little more optimism and perhaps some Ewoks (Probably not) but whatever is it, Abrams has an unenviable task in delivering a Star Wars film to satisfy both fans and critics.
