The recent Avengers: Endgame trailer brought us a whole load of content that’s currently got fans adjusting their theories on what’s to come in next year’s Avengers: Infinity War sequel. But one brand new line of speculation that the teaser managed to start singlehandedly is the matter of how Tony Stark will escape his drift through space, with the internet suggesting an assortment of different characters who might swoop in and rescue our hero at the last minute.
A new post on Reddit, however, is less concerned with how Iron Man might be saved, and more with how Anthony and Joe Russo plan to tell this part of the story, suggesting that Stark’s current cliffhanger might even be resolved off-camera.
User Hypedup80 argues that Tony isn’t likely to be saved right near the start of the film, since the Russos will want to build some suspense and give the character’s situation some emotional weight. It’s perhaps also worth noting that by putting Stark out of action for the movie’s first stretch, the filmmakers have an excellent excuse to keep the plot focused on Captain America, Black Widow and their peers for a while, preventing the story from becoming too busy in these early minutes.
“Stark was left stranded on Titan,” the theory reads. “In the trailer we see him stranded on The Benatar. And that’s where I believe we will leave him once the title card shows up.” The theory then continues to mention that Stark should appear hopeless as long as possible for the best possible reaction from the Avengers that are still alive on Earth. “That way it means something,” /u/hypedup80 says. “Having him being rescued right at the start of the movie will removed all the emotional impact of the scene.”
The theory points out that we should see Stark’s return to Earth through the eyes of those Avengers still left on the third rock from the Sun. “We shouldn’t know how he got rescued before they do, because that would take away from their emotional reaction,” the theory reads. “This way we will learn he is alive when they do, through their eyes. That will add to the scene.”
It’s a reasonable enough suggestion, though there are certainly other ways of giving Stark’s reunion with Earth’s Mightiest Heroes some emotional impact without removing the scene of his rescue. In any case, we’ll see what onscreen and off-screen developments are in store for Tony when Avengers: Endgame hits theaters on April 26th, 2019.
