Spoilers ahead for Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald
Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald wasn’t the next installment to the Wizarding World franchise we wanted. With its critical reception being the worst in the franchise along with its opening weekend not faring as good as it should, you gotta ask… what the hell is going on? There were a ton of problems from its over abundance in characters and fan service along with its muddled narrative. One of the film’s major problems that’s been really highlighted however would be THAT plot twist.
If you’ve seen the film, you know that is is revealed near the end that Credence’s real name is ‘Aurelius Dumbledore’ and is none other than Albus Dumbledore’s estranged brother. This may come as a “what the f–?” moment but not necessarily in a good way. We discussed why this reveal doesn’t make any sense in a separate article but it looks like Credence actor Ezra Miller is quite confident about what series creator J.K. Rowling conjured up and was quite surprised by it too..
In an interview with EW, Miller discussed the big twist near the end of The Crimes of Grindelwald revealing that he was just as surprised when he learned of it. He said:
“I was shocked, stunned, confused, petrificus totalus with wonder and fascination, and I still have a lot of questions for which I have no answers.”
Yeah, so were we Ezra but it doesn’t change the fact that it was stupid. Some may blame this on Rowling cause to be honest, it seems like she doesn’t even read her own books and yeah, we know it’s her books but god, it really doesn’t make a lot of sense. However, Miller believes that Rowling knows what she’s doing, saying:
“She knows the mythology so well and I think she’s into confounding you for a moment and having a fan go, ‘wait that can’t make sense!’ and then showing you how things you thought couldn’t make sense make sense. I think she enjoys people not getting it for a second. She’s done it to us a bunch of times.”
Yeah sure Ezra… whatever you say. Granted, it wouldn’t be much of a surprise if Rowling really had a trick or two up her sleeve. Maybe she has plans for this twist and despite mucking about with the timeline, there’s some plans to make things come together nicely in the end. Who knows? The Crimes of Grindelwald could just be the risk they needed to take for a bigger and ambitious future for the Fantastic Beasts series. Which is still a stupid thing to do!
