For fans who didn’t love X-Men: Apocalypse in theaters, well, Oscar Isaac’s time playing the titular character was apparently just as loathsome.
Isaac revealed the costume and makeup effects needed to play the villain on-screen led to an “excruciating” experience, which feels similar to Jennifer Lawrence’s past complaints about getting into costume to play Mystique over four X-Men movies.
“Apocalypse, that was excruciating, ” he said to GQ. “I didn’t know when I said yes that that was what was going to be happening. That I was going to be encased in glue, latex and a 40-pound suit — that I had to wear a cooling mechanism at all times.”
Isaac revealed he had restrictions in moving his head, which left him isolated from fellow cast members such as Lawrence, Michael Fassbender and James McAvoy; all of whom he wanted to interact with more to help create better chemistry.
“I was like, ‘oh, I get to work with these great actors that I like so much,’ but I couldn’t even see them because I couldn’t move my head,” said Isaac. “And I had to sit on a specially designed saddle, because that’s the only thing I could really sit on, and I would be rolled into a cooling tent in-between takes.” Isaac continued, as he spoke about how sweaty and uncomfortable he was during shooting.
“And every time I moved, it was just like rubber and plastic squeaking, so everything I said had to be dubbed later as well,” he added. “And then getting it off was the worst part, because they just had to kind of scrape it off for hours and hours. So, that was X-Men: Apocalypse.”
So, it sounds like Isaac had about as much fun shooting the movie as many fans had watching it. Let’s hope that next year’s X-Men: Dark Phoenix manages to fare a little better.
