What’s up with films changing their release dates recently? First Wonder Woman pushed it back by pretty far and then the Charlie’s Angels reboot got pushed back by a little bit and now the Grudge reboot is doing the exact opposite. The Grudge series follows a premise centered around those affected by a curse bestowed upon by a deceased family’s rage that destroys the lives of anyone who comes in contact with it. The curse causes its victims to become afflicted with it which in turn leads to a new curse being born and passed like a virus to anyone who comes into contact with the curse in any way. Or something like that…
Pretty gnarly stuff but it works for a horror film and it’s no surprise since its based on the Japanese Ju-on films. Well, Hollywood is no stranger to reboots so this was bound to happen since The Grudge films are still pretty recognizable despite not being all that memorable. The reboot, simply titled, Grudge was initially supposed to be released on August 16, 2019 but now it looks like we may getting an earlier release.
Deadline reports that Sony has rescheduled the release date for Grudge bringing it forward to June 21, 2019. It’s an interesting change not only cause a date’s being brought forward this time but it would be competing against Toy Story 4. Yeah, that’s some serious competition and say whatever you want about target demographic but the Toy Story films strike a chord with all ages. The initial date would have had the film pitted up against Angry Birds 2 and the comedy Good Boys.
Sony must have some serious balls to wanna do this cause well, it’s Toy Story. Not only that, Dark Phoenix and the new Men In Black will also be released around the time so competition is strong. Maybe Sony does have a lot of faith in their property and that they believe Grudge would be something to really look out for. Or maybe they just lost it.
