The Walking Dead Doesn’t Have A Definitive Ending According To Showrunner

Hopefully it doesn’t run out of steam before they do.

AMC’s The Walking Dead is one of the most popular television series today despite its declining viewership. There’s no denying the show’s quality in the middle of its run (Season 3 to 5 in particular) but it’s sadly never reached those heights after but season 9 looks promising. Set in a post-apocalyptic zombie infested landscape based off Robert Kirkman’s graphic novel of the same name, the series has explored a lot of territory. The question is, how much further can they go and is there really an end to all this?

The Walking Dead showrunner, Angela Kang spoke with Screen Rant in a roundtable interview prior to the show’s season 9 premiere. She revealed that there isn’t really an ending in sight for the series, saying:

“I think because the comic is continuing to go, it’s almost at every stage of the big storylines that have been in the comic, because it was being written as I was on the show, I was like, ‘Okay, this is clearly – this show has to end because Robert [Kirkman] is never going to top that.’ And then it’s like he comes up with the next arc, and I’m like, ‘Okay, that’s actually pretty great.’ And then I’m like, ‘That’s definitely the end.’ And then he comes up with like the Whisperers, and I’m like, ‘Well… sh*t.’ There’s so much more story, so it’s been like an evolving thing because he has so much great grist in it that we don’t know where the next arc ends. So, I guess we’ll see where it goes.”

The series does follow the general path of the comics but they don’t exactly adhere to them religiously. It’s unsure if Kirkman has an ending in mind but if he can keep going, let’s just hope they just keep pushing the envelope. The show’s been on air for a long time now and it can get tiring. Hell, it’s actually gotten tiring at one point but it’s managed to deliver nonetheless. The zombies ermm I mean, walkers can deteriorate over time but if more people keep getting ‘bit’, there will be more walkers and when there’s more walkers, there’s more The Walking Dead.
