There’s a ton of hype for the James Wan directed Aquaman starring Jason Momoa and Amber Heard that will be released later this year. So far, things are looking pretty good for the film and star Momoa has expressed a ton of excitement for the flick so far. The underwater scenes may look like Shark Tale at times but what we’ve seen of late especially in New York Comic-Con can really alleviate some skepticism for the film.
The DCEU still looks tumultuous and uncertain especially in regards to the characters or Superman and Batman but if Aquaman hits the right beats, there’s hope. If all goes well for this film, sequels are no doubt on the horizon (Hell, it probably would be even if the film sucks) and it looks like Momoa has a plan for future installments.
According to Syfy Wire, this month’s Total Film has director Wan and Momoa revealing that the upcoming film sets up plenty of story-lines that could lead to a sequel. Wan revealed:
“There’s definitely stories, even within the world we’ve created, that you can actually see other storylines [spinning off from] as well. There’s the Aquamanstory, but then there’s the stories of the seven different kingdoms as well. I think those would be very fun to explore.”
Well, that doesn’t come as a big surprise but it seems that Momoa is quite involved in how a sequel could go having pitched a plan to Warner Bros. Momoa revealed without spoiling anything:
“I definitely have an opinion, even when we were shooting Aquaman, I have the opening of Aquaman 2 ready. I went in and pitched it to [producer Peter] Safran, and I pitched it to [Warner Bros. chairman] Toby Emmerich. They loved it. It’s awesome…But yeah, I have plans for Aquaman 2.”
Damn Momoa! Look at you! Getting involved in the creative processes and s–t. I don’t mean that in a condescending way but that does sound awesome. It’ll be cool to see what these ideas are but Momoa is obviously not gonna tell us at least until this film comes out. He seems like he loves the character so he would definitely have the passion to make this work. If all goes well, maybe Momoa might get a writing credit for the next one.
Aquaman is scheduled to be released on December 21, 2018
