Everyone below the age of 30 remembers the High School Musical films from Disney starring Zac Efron and Vanessa Hudgens. That may be a bold statement but those films were pretty big back in the day launching many of its stars to the big leagues. Following the exploits of Troy Bolton and Gabriella Montez as they attempt to push the status quo by participating in a- god forbid, singing competition! the films were a pretty big part of many childhoods even if it was just a guilty pleasure. There’s going to be a television series based off the films titled, High School Musical: The Musical and it looks like its found its lead actor.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, newcomer Joshua Bassett is set to star in the ten episode series set to air Disney’s forthcoming streaming service. Bassett will play the lead role as Ricky, a high school junior who launches a bold plan to win back his ex-girlfriend Nini by auditioning to star opposite her in the school’s rendition of High School Musical.
Sounds a little meta as the series is set to take a docu-style approach to the series that will follow a group of students at East High who stage a performance of HSM for their winter theater production. The series will feature new renditions of songs from the films along with new songs so there’s a chance we’re gonna hear more cheesy high school love songs.
Bassett isn’t a very big name but he has appeared on Disney’s Stuck in the Middle and the Nickelodeon show Game Shakers. This series isn’t likely gonna be anything noteworthy but fans may be paying attention to this series. It could be something fun and nostalgic so why the hell not? Maybe this guy could rise to stardom too.
