Hollywood is doing what it does best, churning out films from franchises that lost its steam years ago. In case some are unaware, there’s going to be a new Die Hard film. The action franchise has a had a good run back in the day with the action masterpiece Die Hard which saw Bruce Willis’ iconic role as John McClane set up the “regular Joe versus the world” template that we’ve seen in many films after. It’s sequels Die Hard 2 and Die Hard with a Vengeance weren’t as great but were still good sequels in their own right. Live Free or Die Hard saw him become a bloody superhero and A Good Day to Die Hard was just trash.
Following the reception of A Good Day to Die, you would except them to be over with the franchise but no, a sixth film is on its way. Director of Live Free or Die Hard, Len Wiseman has been developing the script with a working title Die Hard: Year One but now, there’s a new title.
In a recent interview with Empire, producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura revealed that the film’s title will be simply be called- McClane. He said:
“You can tell our intention by the fact that the title page we handed in says, ‘McCLANE’, we want you to get invested in John McClane more than ever before.”
McClane? Yeah, real original… never seen an action franchise go that route before (Riddick, Jason Bourne). There have been reports that the film will focus a lot more on a younger McClane but the producer also reveals that Willis will be a big part of the story. He explained:
I don’t know how you do Die Hard without Bruce. The idea that he’s not very significant in this movie is not accurate at all. We are gonna explore John McClane in his twenties. But just as prominent is the 60-year-old version.
Well, we didn’t get a decent Die Hard the last time around but I’ll admit I’m very skeptical. Live Free or Die Hard may not have bode well with everyone but it was sure as hell better than that last piece of s–t we got. Maybe this one will be the Die Hard we need and maybe after this, the franchise would just die.
