Following the death of Carrie Fisher in 2016, some things are a little uncertain for the future of the Star Wars universe. Filming for Star Wars: The Last Jedi was done but it is unsure how Star Wars: Episode IX will handle the character of Leia following the late actress’ death. Lucasfilm would be daft to re-cast her since it’s blasphemy to do so and a CGI recreation as seen in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story is also off the table.
The film could just as easily just write the character off and address it with mere dialogue but it seems like J.J. Abrams is taking a fairly interesting approach to bring the character back. Lucasfilm will be using archival footage from the previous films, hopefully providing a proper sendoff to the icon. It really is unsure how they would be able to pull this off but it seems to be the best thing to do. Oscar Isaac thinks so…
Speaking to Yahoo, Isaac expressed support for Abrams’ decision when asked about Star Wars, particularly the topic of Leia. He said:
“I’m very happy about that. I think it’ll be a wonderful way to deal with this character that we all love so much.”
It is very uncertain how they would take this but if Poe Dameron says it’s okay… It’s okay. Okay fine, but it really is a wonder how they would take this and how it’ll be on screen. It’ll no doubt be a good sendoff but how integral is her part in the film and will it affect the quality? We can only speculate for now but with J.J. Abrams back on board, we can except a satisfying conclusion to the trilogy.
