Netflix Is Developing A Death Note Sequel

The film wasn’t well received by critics but Netflix seems to have a lot of faith in the material.

Netflix has evolved considerably over the years, branching out into the realms of original TV content and original film content with remarkable speed. The streaming service has carved out a name for itself with some notable titles, and now it looks like it’s going to dive even further into franchise territory. Specifically, a sequel to 2017’s Death Note is in development.

In a report focusing on the future of Netflix’s movie division, THR has confirmed a Death Note sequel is in the works. Greg Russo, the writer of the forthcoming Mortal Kombat movie reboot, is penning the screenplay. However, there’s no word on whether or not director Adam Wingard will return to helm the sequel and there aren’t any story and casting details that have been released either.

Death Note was one of Netflix’s most highly anticipated projects last year. Despite a tepid reception from critics, the $40 million production was described as a “sizable” success by chief content officer Ted Sarandos.

Based on the famous Japanese manga written by Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata, Death Note follows a high school student who comes across a supernatural notebook, realizing it holds within it a great power; if the owner inscribes someone’s name into it while picturing their face, he or she will die. Intoxicated with his new godlike abilities, the young man begins to kill those he deems unworthy of life.

Netflix’s Death Note is directed by Adam Wingard. The film stars Nat Wolff, Lakeith Stanfield, Margaret Qualley, and Willem Dafoe as Ryuk. It is available to stream on the platform now.
