Hollywood has made some pretty great films centered around the music scene ranging from a variety of genres and ethnic backgrounds. From biopics such as Ray, tackling the life of Ray Charles to mockumentaries like This Is Spinal Tap, centered around the exploits of a fictional heavy metal band, music has always been a great subject for a film. It seems that now K-Pop is about to garner some attention in the Hollywood film scene as a film centered around the “pop music of South Korea” is in the works by Fox.
Deadline reports that Fox 2000 has landed the rights to a K-Pop centered film based on a pitch by SB Projects. SB Projects is an entertainment and media company founded by Scooter Braun who manages many huge pop artists including Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande along with Epic Magazine.
The film will reportedly follow a young Asian American college from the U.S. who becomes a top competitor on South Korea’s toughest K-Pop Competition show. Elyse Hollander is set to write the screenplay for the film with Braun serving as producer alongside SB Projects’ James Shin and Scott Manson. Other producers include Epic Magazine’s Joshua Davis, Arthur Spector and John Zaozirny from Bellevue Productions. From Fox, we have Erin Siminoff and Jiao Chen as producers.
Well, I guess this could be very good or mediocre as f–k. I’m not a K-Pop fan so the music sure as hell won’t interest me but with a proper screenplay and direction, this could really be a good film. It really is a wonder how they would take this as it does have the potential to have a 33% on Rotten Tomatoes. Then again, Hollywood is going all out with representation and they’ve been doing pretty alright so far, so maybe this could be good too.
