YouTube Removes The Nun Jump-Scare Ad After Complaints

Now our hearts can rest easy.

Those who cannot handle jump scares are advised not to go see The Conjuring spin-off The Nun. But for a few days, YouTube was a no-go zone too. YouTube has removed an ad for the upcoming horror film after it was deemed too terrifying.

Because of the fear the six-second clip has incited in unsuspecting viewers, YouTube has notably taken the video down from the site, according to Deadline. One Twitter user issued a warning about the choice jump-scare in the video and cautioned viewers to turn down the volume “if you have anxiety or just straight up hate jumpscares.” YouTube responded in appreciation for notifying it of the ad’s inflammatory potential, which, the company’s team Twitter account notes, violates its shocking content policy.

According to its “violent and shocking content in ads” policy, YouTube strives “to avoid offending or shocking users with websites or apps that are inappropriate for our ad network.” Examples of content considered violent or shocking include “gruesome imagery” and “promotions that are likely to shock or scare.”

The ad was just six seconds long and mirrored one of those ‘Skip Ad’ inserts, showing an iPhone volume control being reduced which then naturally the phone user would remedy by turning up their volume. Unluckily for them, someone was waiting at the end of the video. The face of the titular Nun sprung up, accompanied by a high-pitched shriek.

While the YouTube ad for the film may be down, The Nun will be jumping into theaters on September 7. The film will focus on a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania that takes her own life. A priest with a haunted past and a novitiate that’s on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together, they uncover the order’s unholy secret and confront a malevolent force in the form of the demonic.

The movie is directed by Corin Hardy, known for his debut feature The Hallow, and will be released by New Line Cinema.
