The upcoming Spawn reboot looks like it’ll serve up one hell of feast with the likes of its creator Todd McFarlane at the helm alongside stars Jamie Foxx as the lead character and Jeremy Renner as Detective Maximilian Steven Percival “Twitch” Williams III. With these two talented stars on board, it looks like we got nothing to worry about. Spawn is a damn cool character and so is how the film found one of its leading men and it’s all thanks to Vodka.
Todd McFarlane revealed how he managed to land Avengers actor Jeremy Renner for Spawn and it has to do with a Grey Goose interview. This bit of information comes courtesy of Screen Rant. The Grey Goose interview refers to the OFF SCRIPT series, a Grey Goose Production launched recently. Host Jamie Foxx sat down with Black Panther‘s Chadwick Boseman, Melissa McCarthy, Vince Vaughn and more. On June 13th, he sat down with Renner.
McFarlane explains the serendipitous nature of the process:
“Yeah! Well here, I’ll tell you a funny story. I had gone up to Mr. Renner’s house to go talk to him about the character to see, you know, basically try to do the sell. I think that was a Thursday. So by the time I did some other things… I flew back to Phoenix, I wake up Friday morning. And Jamie does these interviews with Grey Goose, I don’t know if you’ve seen any of them…. And the one that he posted on Friday, which was literally half a day from where I was, was him talking to Jeremy. And I’m going, ‘Wow! This is serendipitous.’ I’m going ‘There’s Jamie, talking to Jere– this could actually be my two stars here.’ So I poked Jamie and went, ‘Hey Jamie just FYI, I just came from Mr. Renner’s house it looks like you guys are friends…”
Well, he seized the opportunity there of course as it was handed to him on a silver platter. McFarlane further explained:
“I didn’t know they were going to be talking! They didn’t know I was talking– he didn’t know I was talking, I didn’t know he was talking. Again, I don’t know when they recorded it either you know, they could’ve recorded it two months [earlier], I don’t know. But I go, ‘Oh, they at least know each other in some capacity.’ So I text Jamie and go ‘Hey Jamie, we’re all trying to nudge the Renner team here, if you could chime in a little bit…’ So he helped too. They looked good together.”
This interview definitely helped a lot and now we got our leads for Spawn. Both stars have proven to be a presence in a variety of genres ranging from action, comedies to drama. Foxx has won an Academy Award for his performance as the legendary Ray Charles in Ray whereas Renner has two acting nominations under his belt for The Hurt Locker and The Town. Plus, he’s Hawkeye.
It’s hard to really say if Renner would have taken the role if the interview didn’t take place but it doesn’t matter now. Let’s hope these stars and McFarlane deliver a great Spawn film unlike the previous attempt in the 90s.
