Film Awards season hasn’t arrived yet but it looks like we might be getting a taste of something to expect later this year and early next year. Superhero films are generally not recognized during awards season aside from the technical categories. There were a few exceptions with Heath Ledger’s posthumous Best Supporting Actor win for The Dark Knight and Logan’s Best Adapted Screenplay nomination at the Oscars this year. Some awards shows on the other hand have, including the recent BET Awards held on June 24, 2018.
Marvel’s recent Black Panther garnered the award for Best Movie and Best Actor for star Chadwick Boseman at the BET Awards hosted by Jamie Foxx as reported by Variety. The BET Awards celebrates African American and other minorities in the field of entertainment but mostly focus on music. Black Panther has had some success in other award shows including the MTV Movie Awards which saw the film taking home the awards for Best Movie, Best Actor, Best Hero (both for Boseman) and Best Villain for Michael B. Jordan’s Killmonger. Some may speculate that this success in an indication of the Oscars going the same route with nominating the film in major categories come Awards season but let’s not bring our hopes up just yet.
With all due respect, in regards to film, the BET Awards isn’t really something to take too seriously. This is mostly due to their emphasis on music categories which saw some worthy winners but in regards to film…not so much. Think Like A Man won back in 2013 over great works like Django Unchained and Beasts of the Southern Wild and A Wrinkle in Time were among the nominees this year. As for the MTV Movie Awards, they are a goddamn joke! recognizing the “best” in entertainment that mostly align with the teenage demographic.
That’s not to say that Black Panther isn’t a mature film by any means but these awards shows don’t really hold a high place in the film industry especially in the more elitist spectrum. The aforementioned awards shows do nominate Oscar contenders such as Mudbound in the BET Awards and Saoirse Ronan from Lady Bird in the Best Performance in a Movie category during the MTV Movie Awards but they tend to go with the more mainstream as averse the Oscars.
However, the technical categories could be dominated by the MCU come Oscar season with Black Panther, Avengers: Infinity War and the upcoming Ant-Man & The Wasp. There will definitely be some love thrown there and that’s good enough.
