Avengers: Infinity War Screenwriters Explain How They Would Fix The DCEU

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely were very frank in their advice.

Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus, the co-writers of Marvel’s Avengers: Infinity War,” criticized the creative process behind the DC Extended Universe in a recent interview with “Fat Man on Batman” podcast host Kevin Smith.

In an interview that certainly won’t inflame the DC vs. Marvel rivalry at all, Kevin Smith’s Fat Man on Batman podcast spoke with Captain America film writers Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus recently and the topic of the DC film universe came up. Kevin Smith asked the writers of Avengers: Infinity War how to fix DC Comics movies, prompting a simple response from Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely.

The writing duo offered their thoughts on a direction for the DC Extended Universe, saying they’d focus on some lesser explored DC Comics characters. Markus went first. “I mean, I would look at what Marvel did out of necessity, in that they didn’t have their A-list characters,” Markus said. “I might put Batman and Superman and everybody else, I mean Wonder Woman is doing fine, aside for a second,” said Markus. “Go through the vast world and go, ‘That guy’ or ‘That girl,’ and go, ‘Let’s just make a really good movie and not a universe and see what happens.’ There’s a lot of spaghetti being thrown at the wall.”

McFeely had a similar outlook. “My familiarity with the DC universe is not that great but I can just say, strategically, ‘Make one,'” McFeely said. “To quote Justice League, ‘Save one person.'”

The future of the DCEU is still up in the air, however, hopes are high for Aquaman, Shazam and the Wonder Woman sequel which are all confirmed to be on the way in the next eighteen months.
