Chris Pratt Defends Star-Lord From The Infinity War Hate

Cut him some slack.

Avengers: Infinity War’s ending wasn’t just surprising, it changed the universe as we know it. So, naturally, fans are trying to figure out where to throw the blame around. Poor Star-Lord has been on the receiving end of fan abuse, with many of them blaming him for the grim outcome of Avengers: Infinity War. Marvel fans were angered by the controversial decision made by Star-Lord that led directly to Thanos’ victory.

The moment in question featured some of the Guardians and the Avengers, plus Doctor Strange, who had traveled to Titan to face Thanos. They came up with a haphazard plan to distract him, then hold him down, giving them a brief window to pull the Infinity Gauntlet off of his arm. Amazingly, the strategy worked, but then Peter Quill blew it when Gamora’s sister Nebula revealed Gamora had gone off with Thanos and had not returned. He loses it. Enraged that the love of his life is dead, Star-Lord begins futilely punching the temporarily incapacitated Thanos, only to distract from the actual plan of trying to get the Infinity Gauntlet in the brief window of time that they had.

In a video interview with Radio Times, Pratt was asked why Star-Lord screwed up the team’s plan to remove Thanos’ gauntlet and save the universe in Avengers: Infinity War. Responding to the criticism Star-Lord has received, Chris had this to say.

Look — the guy watched his mother die, he watched as his father-figure died in his arms, he was forced to kill his own biological father. And now has suffered the loss of the love of his life. So, I think he reacted in a way that’s very human, and I think the humanity of the Guardians of the Galaxy is what sets them apart from other superheroes. I think if we did it a hundred times I wouldn’t change a thing.

Pratt also took the time to helpfully reframe the whole blame game, getting a little more jokey about the backlash.

I guess you could have the movie end a half-hour earlier if you wanted, but it seemed like people really liked this. And also, I blame Thanos, OK? Jeez, how come he’s not getting any blame? Clearly, I’m very sensitive about this.

Let’s hope the fans cut him some slack moving forward.
