Dave Bautista Improvised Drax’s Best Line During Infinity War

Improvisation is a somewhat common theme in Infinity War.

Despite its seriousness, Avengers: Infinity War was at times a pretty lighthearted movie, and in keeping with MCU tradition, a lot of its best moments are totally improvised. Many fans consider a certain line of dialogue spoken by Guardians Of The Galaxy member Drax to be the funniest. It seems Dave Bautista also went off-script during Avengers: Infinity War, and it arguably resulted in Drax’s best scene.

In an extensive interview with Yahoo! EntertainmentInfinity War screenwriters Stephen McFeely and Christopher Markus revealed that actor Dave Bautista actually came up with the line during shooting.  “The script only said, ‘Where is Gamora?’ ‘I’ll do you even better: Who is Gamora?’” Markus said. “And then one day Bautista just goes, ‘I’ll do you one better: Why is Gamora?’”

The hilarious Drax line is just one of the examples from Avengers: Infinity War of an actor elevating what was in the script to something even more resonant. This comes on the heels of the revelation that actor Tom Holland improvised the “I don’t want to go” line Peter Parker says to Tony Stark before dying. It seems clear that directors Joe and Anthony Russo encouraged some improvisation, which has definitely served them well. It’s an approach that feels risky, but with enough talent in the room, as well as enough time to kill, it’s apparently an approach that works.

In theaters now, Avengers: Infinity War stars Robert Downey Jr., Josh Brolin, Mark Ruffalo, Tom Hiddleston, Chris Evans, Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner, Chris Pratt, Elizabeth Olsen, Sebastian Stan, Benedict Cumberbatch, Paul Bettany, Samuel L. Jackson, Cobie Smulders, Benedict Wong, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Vin Diesel, Dave Bautista, Pom Klementieff, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Holland and Anthony Mackie.
