I enjoyed Captain Marvel and Brie Larson’s presence as the character, in Avengers: Endgame. The Captain Marvel solo movie, though, not so much. The film is a brilliant showcase of Captain Marvel’s incredible powers, but severely lacked drama and tension. I’m of the opinion that directors Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck underdelivered.
Which is why I’m excited that Disney/Marvel Studios have roped in someone new to helm the sequel. According to Deadline, Nia DaCosta who most recently helmed the Jordan Peele-produced horror film, Candyman, will be directing Captain Marvel 2.
DaCosta is a big name waiting to happen. Her debut feature film Litte Woods earned her critical praise, while many are already predicting that Candyman could turn out to be the horror movie of the year.
DaCosta will direct from a script by Megan McDonnell, who penned the scripts for the upcoming Disney+ dramedy, WandaVision. Captain Marvel 2 will of course star Brie Larson as the titular character. There are no plot details as of now.
