Game of Thrones season 8 is on the horizon and we just can’t wait to see how HBO’s epic fantasy series comes to a close. Well, it sucks that it’s ending but it’s great that we are finally going to see the end product of what could be one of the most iconic television series of the decade. Based on the A Song of Ice and Fire novels by George R.R. Martin, the fantasy series was created by David Benioff and D.B.Weiss. Initially, the series adhered to the source material pretty tightly with Martin himself being heavily involved in the series’ production. But then, the series began to pass the books and well, we’re going to see the final season of the series but there are still two more books to on the way.
It all started with season 5 as we were introduced to characters and storylines that have not yet occurred in the books (If they are even going to occur in the books). Martin has created an overall plot structure for Game of Thrones and he even has an ending in mind for the books but it looks like the series could go another route. Since Martin is still working on the sixth book (out of seven) Winds of Winter, it looks like he didn’t really have much time to bother with the series as much as he used to.
With Martin being the creator of Game of Thrones, you gotta assume that he would at least know how the series would end right? Well, maybe he does but it does seem like he’s not all that knowledgeable on how it would all go down in season 8. In an interview with EW, he revealed:
“I haven’t read the [final-season] scripts and haven’t been able to visit the set because I’ve been working on Winds, I know some of the things. But there’s a lot of minor-character [arcs] they’ll be coming up with on their own. And, of course, they passed me several years ago. There may be important discrepancies.”
Maybe I should pick up those Song of Ice and Fire novels since they could be quite different from the series. It really looks like Game of Thrones season 8 could go anywhere. If you expect Martin to spill the beans, it sure as hell seems pointless but hell, as long as we get that final season. It wouldn’t be the end though since there has been word on a prequel series in development so there could be more Thrones to go around.
