Mark Hamill Reveals Unscripted Moment From The Last Jedi

Mark Hamill has revealed a fan favorite moment from Star Wars: The Last Jedi was, in fact, an unscripted and spontaneous moment.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi certainly split the fandom, but no matter what side of the dividing line you sit upon, everyone can pick out one or two moments from the movie that they will remember forever. One such moment, that has been brought up again and again as a fan favourite, has been revealed by Mark Hamill as being unscripted and spontaneous.

It occurred at the end of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, and it is a moment between Luke and Leia. A moment which was effectively Luke saying goodbye to Leia one final time. Knowing full well that what he was about to do, go head to head with Kylo Ren in order to give everyone a chance to escape, would cost him his life.

Mark Hamill revealed via Twitter there was an unscripted and spontaneous part to this moment, check out what he said himself just below.

After a Star Wars fan on Twitter praised Luke and Leia’s “emotionally rich” reunion in The Last Jedi, where the siblings share a moment during the Crait battle, Hamill replied, “An emotionally charged day on set filming this because, knowing he was about to sacrifice his life for the greater good, Luke was saying goodbye… forever. The kiss was unscripted & spontaneous in the moment, summarizing his/my feelings in a way words could never have conveyed.”

It was the first time Hamill and Carrie Fisher were on-screen together in 34 years, and also the last: she passed away in 2016. With the death of Carrie Fischer, it is an even more powerful moment now. One that I don’t think anyone will look at the same way ever again.

Leia and Luke are both set to appear in J.J. Abrams’ mysterious Star Wars: Episode IX. While Luke likely died during Star Wars: The Last Jedi, smart money says he’ll pop back up as a Force Ghost, especially after Yoda recently did the same. As for Leia, Carrie Fisher will be included in the upcoming blockbuster through unused footage from Star Wars: The Force Awakens and Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

Star Wars: Episode IX will arrive in theatres on December 20th, 2019
