The 2019 Oscars saw all sorts of memorable moments ranging from Trevor Noah’s hilarious inside joke that flew over many people’s heads to Green Book‘s surprising Best Picture win. One other memorable moment would be the performance of “Shallow” from A Star is Born which was nominated for Best Original Song, eventually winning. Stars Lady Gaga and Bradley Cooper (who also directed the film) took the stage to perform the song and they did it so well that one could assume that they’re actually in love. Actually, a lot of people assumed that the two stars were actually an item.
Yep, the chemistry was strong but it seems like some people can’t tell the difference between real life and show business. Lady Gaga discussed the matter on Jimmy Kimmel Live! addressing much of the speculation surrounding a “relationship” between the two. She said:
“Quite frankly, social media is the toilet of the Internet. What it has done to pop culture is abysmal. People saw love, and guess what, that’s what we wanted you to see. This is a love song, ‘Shallow.’ The movie, A Star is Born, is a love story.”
They are definitely NOT together! It’s a love song, you’re supposed to convey that mood in a performance but clearly it worked too well. Gaga also highlighted how Cooper directed the stage performance to set the feel for the whole thing so it’s not like they were just having some High School Musical 2 moment.
If anything, this is a testament to the abilities of Cooper and Gaga in providing great performances both on screen and on stage. It really was a great performance and it wouldn’t be a surprise if the two would work together again in the future.
Lady Gaga received three Oscar nominations at the 91st Academy Awards, in which she won one — Best Original Song.
