With the 2019 Oscars over and done with, we can look forward to what the rest of the year has in store for us in the world of film. The ceremony saw a lot of good contenders but in the end, Green Book took home the coveted Best Picture prize. It was kinda surprising, to be honest since the film didn’t get nominated for Best Director but hell, it’s not like that hasn’t happened before (An example being Ben Affleck’s Argo). However, a lot of other films got some love as well including the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Black Panther which is the first comic book film to be nominated for Best Picture.
The Ryan Coogler directed film earned three Oscars but the film being nominated for Best Picture was already a pretty big deal for the comic book genre but let’s be honest here, it wasn’t really going to win for Best Picture. Despite this, some fans seem pretty upset that the award went to Green Book instead of Black Panther with many considering the latter to be more worthy of receiving the award.
Some fans took to Twitter to express some frustration towards the result and well… just check them out below:
The Academy tipped its hand when it tried to create that Popular Film category a few months ago. They knew Black Panther wasn’t going to win Best Picture. 😒😒 #Oscars

#BohemianRhapsody & #BlackPanther in my mind will be the true best picture winners of #Oscars2019.I said my peace. Bye! pic.twitter.com/ClthSiyi5w

Green Book winning Best Picture over Black Panther is giving me flashbacks to Crash winning over Brokeback Mountain; the Academy voted for the “safe” option over the right one

My prediction: None of these Best Picture nominees will be greatly remembered in five years, other than Black Panther. Remember when people got up in arms about Boyhood losing to Birdman? No?

We all know #BlackPanther was the best movie of 2018. And honestly, the movie loses nothing without having a best picture #Oscar. But the Academy loses some of the respect it was gaining. Just how I feel about.

Box-office receipts have nothing to do with quality. Just look at the Transformers films.

Now, I personally don’t think that Black Panther was the best film of the year but clearly, there are people who do, including our resident film reviewer Dashran Yohan. Green Book‘s win was a surprise though and it really seemed like the Best Picture prize would be going to a Foreign Language film this year (Looking at you Roma).
That said, Black Panther‘s nomination could be an indication that we might be seeing a more diverse (in terms of genre) list of nominees in the coming years and that can only be a good thing.
