Holy Balls! Lucasfilm is Currently Developing Obi-Wan TV Series

Did you hear that? That my friend is the sound of Star Wars fans across the galaxy collectively experiencing a nerdgasm!

For the longest time now, fans of the galaxy far far away have been clamouring for an Obi-Wan film. Obi-Wan (as played by Ewan McGregor) is easily one of the best aspects of the prequel trilogy. Star Wars-holics will also know that there’s so much more to the character than what we’ve seen on the big screen so far. For example, contrary to popular belief, the former Padawan of Qui-Gon Jinn didn’t just chill out in a cave smoking pipeweed for 19 years and then take Luke on an adventure when he hit puberty. The man actually did so much more, including killing off Darth Maul once and for all, as we learn in Star Wars: Rebels.

So it’s only natural for fans to get on their knees and practically beg Disney for more Obi-Wan live action goodness. God knows I’ve been doing it. Well, it looks like our prayers have finally been answered, but perhaps not quite in the manner, we were expecting.

According to StarWarsNewsNet, Lucasfilm is currently developing a live-action Obi-Wan, NOT movie, but limited series for Disney+ (the house of mouse’s new streaming service set towards the tail end of 2019). It’s also reported that the series could potentially run for as many as six episodes.

Did you hear that? That my friend is the sound of Star Wars fans across the galaxy collectively experiencing a nerdgasm! An Obi-Wan film would’ve been great; an Obi-Wan limited series? Even better. After all, all the great TV series these days (think Game of Thrones) are not only as cinematic as they come, they also feel like one long movie.

As Bob Iger and co previously hinted, Lucasfilm will be heading in a different direction after episode IX. Iger previously mentioned that there could be a “slowdown” in Star Wars films after J.J. Abrams brings the Skywalker saga full circle this December, as they turn their attention to Disney+.

Look, I’m merely speculating here, but it seems to me that moving forward, Lucasfilm will only be making huge saga films for the big screen (i.e Benioff & Weiss’ and Rian Johnson’s trilogy) while the other ‘Star Wars stories’ will be made into full/limited series on Disney+. Which feels like the best way to go about it. As of right now, we know that Jon Favreau’s TV Series, The Mandalorian will be dropping on the streaming platform this year and Lucasfilm has also confirmed that they’re currently working on a Cassian Andor prequel series. I am giddy!
