It feels like forever that fans have been waiting to hear some hopeful news on Fox’s Marvel title Gambit. But for a long time, the project is believed to have been shelved since there’s been no wind of any activity related to the film’s development. Now, it looks like Gambit and several other Marvel movies like X-Force are all in risk of possibly being shelved.
Recently, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner told reporters at the Television Critics Association panel for Legion that Gambit and X-force movies will go into production only if Disney wants to. “That’s up to Disney,” Shuler Donner said specifically in regard to Gambit. “That really is up to Disney. I hope so, but that’s up to them. The problem is you can’t have too many Marvel, X-Men superhero movies out there because we will cancel each other out. Each one has to be distinctive and yet you’ve got The Avengers to follow through. You’ve got so many distinctive story canons to follow through and yet we want new ones, but I don’t think you can have more than four. Four is a lot because people are going to get sick of them, so we have to be careful. He has to be careful.”
Unfortunately, this seems to be the same case for X-Force which was expected to begin filming this year. “Same as everything,” Shuler Donner said. “This is all now in Disney’s playground and they get to decide. At least we know it’s in good hands. Everybody’s worked really hard up to now on the Fox side but now it’s going to be Disney’s call.”
This news shouldn’t’ come as surprise to many as these Marvel projects are still in early development stages and have failed to go into production before the finalization of the merger. While Disney may decide to go ahead with another Deadpool movie, it currently remains to be seen if the studio would go ahead with making a Gambit solo movie.
Since Kevin Feige will be handling these new Marvel properties, it is still unknown if the MCU president would decide to incorporate the new Marvel characters within the cinematic universe or let them exist on their own. Nonetheless, Feige will be one of the people at Disney deciding if Gambit and X-Force can go forward.
