Hayao Miyazaki and his son are working on two new Studio Ghibli productions. That’s according to Vincent Maraval, the founder of Wild Bunch distribution company, who tweeted the news yesterday.
Maraval made the claim after visiting the legendary studio. He wrote, translated from French: “I can report that Miyazaki senior and junior are at work. 2 new Studio Ghibli productions are underway and the drawings are in-cre-di-ble! Really exciting.”
No further details about the two productions were provided by Maraval. Hayao Miyazaki, 78, came out of retirement in 2016 after three years away. His last feature film, The Wind Rises, was released in 2013. More recently he’s been working on How Do You Live? with Studio Ghibli, which is expected to surface next year.
And then there’s Boro the Caterpillar, a very old project which he has been working on for more than 20 years. The 12-minute short film initially planned for the Ghibli Museum is now being adapted into a feature film for 2019. His son Goro demonstrated his talent in From Up On Poppy Hill in 2011.
Meanwhile, Hayao Miyazaki is involved in a reforestation awareness-raising campaign in the “Tokoro no Mori” forest, where he found the inspiration for My Neighbor Totoro, and where he is working to restore the plant species which have disappeared. At the age of 78, “Senseï” Miyazaki hasn’t stopped surprising us, and we couldn’t be happier.
