Watch the Opening Scene and New Trailer of The New Mutants

20th Century Studios (which is, of course, 20th Century Fox rebranded by Disney), has released a short clip from the opening scene from the long-awaited comic book film, The New Mutants. On top of that, we also got a shiny new action-heavy trailer. These new footage was released during The New Mutants Comic-Con@Home panel, featuring director Josh Boone and the ensemble cast of the film, Anya Taylor-Joy, Maisie Williams, Charlie Heaton, Blu Hunt and Henry Zaga.

I’m not usually a fan of action-heavy trailers. I tend to lean more towards a marketing campaign that focuses more on the characters and the emotional and psychological side of things. This opening scene plus trailer that debuted at Comic-Con@Home definitely sways towards the former. It’s chaotic, things are flying around and characters are constantly using their powers. That said, these action sequences do look pretty cool and Anya Taylor-Joy (Split, The Witch), who I like very much, looks absolutely badass as Magik. These footage do make me wonder, though, about the tone of the film. For the longest time, The New Mutants was billed as a psychological horror-thriller, but judging by what I just saw, it looks like it’s going to be a huge action spectacle?

Weirdly enough, the film is still set to hit theatres on August 27, which doesn’t quite make sense given everything that’s going on in the US with COVID-19. Considering Disney has postponed their entire calendar to the end of the year, next year or indefinitely, it looks like the House of Mouse has forgotten about poor old New Mutants.
