Captain Marvel is definitely going to make a splash this year before Avengers: Endgame makes a splash this year too. The film will serve as an introduction to Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) as well as a prequel to the Marvel Cinematic Universe with its 1990s setting. It will see some familiar faces on screen with younger versions of the characters we’ve come to know from the MCU. The film will see Carol as a member of the Kree warrior team Starforce as she heads to earth to team up with Fury to stop the ongoing Kree-Skrull war learning more about her past on earth in the process.
The trailers gave us a glimpse of what Captain Marvel would look like featuring some space s–t along with that 90s setting which would probably allow for some sweet nostalgia to be felt. However, it looks like the film’s setting isn’t going to be the only thing to spark some sense of nostalgia… at least according to the film’s producer.
Speaking with Screen Rant in the Captain Marvel set last year, producer Jonathan Schwartz discussed the “genre” the film is inspired by. Qualifying the film as 90s action film, he said:
“It feels weird calling it a genre but the genres is 90s action movie. Like if you think about movies like Robocop or Total Recall or Terminator 2 or Independence Day I think there are common action movie threads you can tease through those movies which are what we’re trying to pick up on in this movie.”
Well Robocop is from the late 80s but the rest is from the 90s and god, those are some real sources of inspiration that would allow for a great viewing experience. Granted, Robocop and Terminator 2 were both Rated-R and Captain Marvel is PG-13 so I guess it wouldn’t really be like those film but Independence Day seems likely to be emulated. Whatever it is, as long as it’s a good.
