His more popular stint in My Chemical Romance may be behind but Gerard Way has always been busy with stuff including his comic book series The Umbrella Academy. Way’s comics takes the superhero genre and gives it a darkly comedic twist and now we’re going to see an adaptation of it on Netflix. The teaser for the upcoming series has been dropped and it looks funny, charming and above all else, fun.
The Umbrella Academy follows a group of unorthodox superheroes in alternate US history who were are all adopted as children by Sir Reginald Hargreeves for special training. They reunite as adults and well… we can expect some interesting s–t to go down.
Based off the teaser, The Umbrella Academy looks like it’s definitely going to be something to look out for if you’re a fan of comic books or not-so-mainstream comic books a’la Kick-Ass or Scott Pilgrim vs The World. It doesn’t offer much but it does give some stylish editing, music and character designs we can hope to really shine in the series. Granted, the CGI doesn’t look fantastic but who gives a s–t? With enough visual style and good storytelling, we may have a new popular superhero series on Netflix (God knows we need one since Daredevil’s been cancelled).
The Umbrella Academy stars Ellen Page, Tom Hooper, Robert Sheehan, Emmy Raver-Lampman, David Castañeda, Aidan Gallagher, Mary J. Blige, Cameron Britton, Colm Feore, Adam Godley and John Magaro. The series is scheduled to premiere on February 15, 2019 so mark your calendars Netflix and My Chemical Romance lovers.
