James Wan Discusses Why The Conjuring Became A Franchise

It’s not just the money.

It’s safe to say that The Conjuring franchise is quite possibly the most popular horror franchise today. Starting off with James Wan’s The Conjuring way back in 2013, the film saw a sequel, a spin off, a prequel to the spin-off and now we’re getting a spin-off to the sequel…. of Conjuring 2 I mean. It’s safe to say that there’s plenty of hype surrounding The Nun but it’s really impressive to see how this managed to turn into one hell of a franchise filled with mostly good films (The first Annabelle was dog s–t).

In a new featurette for The Nun, series creator James Wan discusses why and how he and his team expanded the 2013 hit film into a full blown horror cinematic universe. I know what you’re thinking… Of course, money had something to do with it but it seems that this franchise expansion was inspired by superhero films . He explained:

One of the things that occurred to all of us early on is, they have a superhero universe, why can’t we do that in the horror world?

So yeah, money. Well, duh… why else are these franchises made for? I know, I know… expand the stories. Then again, you would wonder if Wan had bigger plans from the start of it all. He further elaborated:

When we were making the first Conjuring, it became very apparent to us that there could be a bigger universe – so many other great stories that would be awesome to look into.”

Honestly, it’s nice to have such a great and expansive horror franchise. Usually these franchises suck later on despite having an interesting premise at the start (looking at you Nightmare on Elm Street). Granted, The Conjuring series isn’t perfect but hell, The Nun looks like it’ll deliver one hell of a scare feast next month.

The Nun will be released on September 7, 2018
